Introduction to Self Defense taught by martial artist, Kate Hughes. Learn simple techniques in a queer safe space to help you be better prepared in potentially dangerous situations.

About the Event:

Black Belt Kate Hughes (she/they) will be teaching simple self defense techniques to help you stay safe and prepared. This is a very imforative introduction class where you will be taught techniques and be able to safely practice them. 

Farbota Lynn and Ashley Flowers, founders of Handkerchief Films, will be hosting this event at First Ascent Uptown. All proceeds are going towards their upcoming film, Damage CTRL, a short film exploring themes of sexual violence and the failings of our justice system. Please arrive 15 minutes early to complete a waiver for the gym. Thank you!

Kate Hughes (she/they) started her martial arts training in 1999 at six years old. Since then, she has trained in several disciplines, including TaeKwondo, Filipino Martial Arts, and Tang Soo Do, for which she received her first degree black belt in 2014. Kate spent five years teaching full time at True Balance Karate in Downer's Grove, where she worked with students of all ages and experience levels. She is currently working towards her second degree in Tang Soo Do and continues to share her passion for martial arts at every opportunity.
